Tom would like to extend a big thanks to The Blues Foundation for all the nominations at this year’s 43rd Blues Music Awards, to be held in Memphis in May. Tom Racks up 10 Nominations at this year’s BMA’s And ultimately, Tom won the award for Drummer of the Year. All of these albums were produced and/or cowritten by Tom. Kingfish won for Contemporary Blues Album of the Year. Selwyn Birchwood won for Song of the Year.

George Martin might have thought to guide them in this respect. A better producer might have said "This has an incredible chorus, but its structure is a bit convoluted. This song is prime power pop on the level of the Raspberries and might have had hit potential as well. But I think it needed a re-write and a different arrangement. Speaking of Dan Peek, "Jet Boy Blue" is crazy-catchy. Granted, it was an Adult Contemporary smash, but I think it should have been a bigger all-around hit.
I also think a better vocal take was needed here. That's one heck of a chorus, but it just breezes by the first time, la-de-dah.
"Today's The Day" (a moderate Top 40 hit penned by Dan Peek) needs to have its chorus repeated twice on the first go-round.

Since Martin oversaw both "All You Need Is Love" and "Hey Jude," he might have told Gerry Beckley that this song was so good they needed to ride out the groove for a full five minutes. Wonder if someone like Todd Rundgren or Richard Dashut would have made it "pop" a bit more so it could have been a 45 pick. It's a great opener, but it's WAY too short a song and undercooked arrangement-wise. America needed to change with the times.īeckley's "Lovely Night" shows they had it in them to do just that. But I think a more hands-on production approach was needed for the LP and singles to gain commercial traction. But I don't think George Martin was serving them well as producer at this point.Īrtistically, the album works. Hideaway might be my favorite album of theirs. I think we just covered the whole album here. "Can't You See" and "She's Beside You" are his two other songs on the album, and they are both fun listens. He has an underrated song on here called "Jet Boy Blue," another one of my early America discoveries (no pun intended). Dan's "Today's The Day" is the album's biggest hit, and was among the first America songs I ever heard. He opens side B with "She's A Liar," one of America's hardest rockers. He also has a couple of ballads here, including "Watership Down" and "She Loves You," which always get me very emotional. Gerry opens up the album with "Lovely Night," a catchy Reggae-influenced track. Despite being instrumental, I think these tracks are underrated and highlights of the album. Part 2 is an even more dark, electric guitar oriented track. Part 1 is a horn based, Latin composition. These two parts are seemingly the same song at first, but comparing them is very interesting. Dewey also gave us the two-part instrumental "Hideaway", which closes off both sides of the record. Dewey has another song right after, "Don't Let It Get You Down" which is another fun Latin ditty, similar to Dan's final America song ever on the next album. His first song on the album "Amber Cascades" has a short and interesting chorus, and I remember asking my mom who "the man who walks on the water" is. Dewey's best track on here IMO is "Letter," one of my favorite America songs ever.
Like all the other "H" America albums, this one conjures a boatload of childhood memories (of the 2000s). It looks like Hideaway needs some more appreciation in this thread.
